In the last post we discussed about the difference in CMYK and RGB Colorspace. RGB is an additive colorspace and is primarily used to display colors on our monitors and computer screens. CMYK on the other hand is a subtractive colospace and is used to produce colors in the real world. For example our printers use CMYK colospace to print our pictures and photos while our monitors use RGB profile to display the pictures.

Many a times it is a necessary to convert an image from RGB to CMYK colorspace as it gives us an idea of how our image will look after printing.  Here we are listing 5 free and online tools which can be used to convert images from rgb to cmyk and vice versa.


1) CMYKconverter :

RGB to CMYK Converter

It is a free online utility to convert RGB files to CMYK and Vice Versa. It is a simple toll and has a 3 step process. Upload File to the website. After that choose  choose the conversion process –  either CMYK to RGB or RGB to CMYK. Finally, click the convert button and download the image to your computer. The photo should be in JPG or TIFF format with maximum size of 8 MB.

2) rgb2cmyk.org:

It is online tool to convert images from rgb to cmyk format. It works similar to cmykconverter.com. It follows a three step process where you upload the file to convert. It has an additional option for choosing the cmyk conversion profile. It supports 12 different CMYK profile to choose from. The converted file can be downloaded in JPG or TIFF format.

3) http://web.forret.com/tools/color.asp:

It is different from the above tools as it converts rgb color to its cmyk equivalent.  It does not convert the whole image but a single color. To use this tool just enter the rgb code of a color and click on the button. It can perform “CMYK to RGB” and “RGB to CMYK” conversion. If you want to quickly convert rgb color code to cmyk , this could be a handy tool.

4) http://www.javascripter.net/faq/hex2cmyk.htm

Javascript RGB to CMYK

It is a simple tool for converting RGB Hex values to CMYK percentages. Its usage is equally simple. Just type in the RGB hex values and it will calculate the equivalent CMYK Percentages.

5) Easy RGB to CMYK:Easy RGB to CMYK

It is again a tool to convert RGB values to CMYK Values. It has a lot of options to choose from .For Example this tool can be used for RGB, CMYK, L*ab, L*ch, L*uv, Hunter and XYZ colorspace. One can convert RGB codes to CMYK  L*ab, L*ch, L*uv, Hunter and XYZ colorspace. It is a powerful and tool and could also be a bit confusing for a first time user.  They also have a 4 step guide for using the calculator.

In ASP.Net you can use the Bitmap object to convert a graphic to CMYK (or RGB), then output as a Jpeg.

Nice post. I am going to give them a try. So far, I have been using website Convert.world / zamzar to convert my files. Both of them are splendid. Specially Convert.world, It’s simple and to-the-point design makes it easy and speedy.

The file output is jpg or tiff in these programs. What if you have a transparency in your file? If I can’t save as a PNG, this is no help.
